The Balanzza is a handheld device that travels with you giving you the power to weigh your own luggage before getting slapped with those sky-high overweight baggage charges. Is it a Deal or a Dud?

Whether you’re heading out of town or coming back home, the cost to travel these days can be expensive. Especially when you throw in all those added and sometimes hidden fees.

Overweight luggage is just one example. Here’s the proof if that Samsonite of yours is over 50 pounds.

American Airlines will charge you $50 bucks, Delta, $90 and Southwest is $25. And transferring personal belongings from one bag to other just to bring the weight down can be embarrassing.

Which is why a Florida based company came up with the Balanzza. It’s the first handheld luggage scale that allows you to weigh your bags before you get to the ticket counter.

Allison Casteel’s family is traveling to the Netherlands. And she packed a lot. “The bigger one is probably pretty close to 50 pounds or as close as you can get,” she said.

With her approval, we attached the Balanzza to her suitcase. Turn it on, and then lift. In a matter of seconds we got a reading of 37.1lbs.

We then put Allison’s bag on a scale that the airlines use. You can find it right next the ticket counter.

It shows her bag weighing 39lbs. Remember, the Balanzza came up with 37lbs, a difference of just 2lbs. “Wow, I was impressed. I would have thought it was heavier,” Allison said.

So what does this frequent flier think of the Balanzza? Time for Allison to weigh in, “I would call it a deal.”

The Balanzza will cost you $24.95. You can find it online.

Let’s face it — flying isn’t easy any more with all the security checks, rules and fees. But there may be some help to avoid some fees with the Balanzza digital luggage scale. The device lets you weigh your luggage before you check in, which gives you the chance to stay under the fifty pound mark and avoid the extra fees.

The scale is easy to read and use. You strap the device to your luggage or whatever you want to weigh and lift the product.

Then wait for the scale to beep and find out the weight of the luggage.

The device features a tare and zero function to help calibrate whatever it is you’re checking out. But don’t just think luggage — the Balanzza can also help weigh your parcel and postage items or even help with outdoors activities including fishing and gaming.

Balanzza can weigh up to 100 pounds. It only weighs ten ounces and requires two AAA batteries.
